Trial underway for man accused of murdering fellow corrections officer

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – The trial is underway for a man accused of killing a fellow corrections officer.

Rigoberto Sanchez faces five charges, including murder and attempted murder.

Opening statements were held Thursday.

Sanchez is accused of shooting 31-year-old Edwin Lima, who also worked at the prison in Tehachapi.

Sanchez's estranged wife was also in the apartment the night of the 2017 shooting, police said. She was not injured.

Lima and Sanchez's wife were dating, police said at the time.

The defense attorney claims his client acted in self-defense.
