Two arrested after officer assaulted in traffic stop

The Bakersfield Police Department arrested a pair after one them allegedly assaulted an officer during a traffic stop.

Michael Fitz, 36, and Mary Ochoa, 39, were arrested after officers pulled their car over around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Liggett Street.

While searching the car, officers found body armor and a loaded gun.

During the arrest, Fritz allegedly attempted to assault an officer with a hypodermic needle, according to police. The officer was able to get away unharmed.

Ochoa was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, conspiracy and firearm crimes.

Fritz was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer, being a felon in possession of body armor, and firearm and gang-related crimes.
