Vigils targeting Congressmen McCarthy, Valadao planned for Thursday

Various groups are planning a march and vigil Thursday in an effort "to denounce Republican attacks on healthcare and immigrants," according to Fight for Our Health Coalition.

The target of this vigil is Congressman Kevin McCarthy, the majority leader.

A news release sent by Tom Webster of SEIU Local 521 reads, in part:

"The mounting pressure to maintain healthcare and protect immigrants from extreme actions is so intense, members like McCarthy are effectively hiding from their constituents rather than face questions."

Participating in this vigil are the Kern, Inyo, Mono Central Labor Council; Health Access; Planned Parenthood; Faith in the Valley; Dolores Huerta Foundation; SEIU Locals 521 and 2015; SEIU UHW; and United Farm Workers Foundation.

They say they'll gather before 5:50 p.m. at Town and County Village Shopping Center, then march to McCarthy's home.

Brett Abrams, of Unbendable Media LLC, said in a separate news release that people will also protest Thursday afternoon in Hanford at the office of Congressman David Valadao, who represents parts of Bakersfield and Kern County.

Various groups protested Tuesday night outside the Kern County Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser, demanding McCarthy and another valley congressman address community concerns by holding town hall meetings.

So far, McCarthy hasn't scheduled any town halls. Meanwhile, Republican members of Congress in other states are holding town hall meetings this week and facing constituents who are angry with some of President Donald Trump's policies.
