Hockey greats Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille are coming to Bakersfield in January as part of the festivities leading up to the Condorstown Outdoor Classic.

The Outdoor Classic will pit the Bakersfield Condors and the Ontario Reign, both AHL teams, against each other inside Bakersfield College's open-air Memorial Stadium. That game is set for Jan. 7.

Hall of Famers Gretzky and Robitaille will captain the NHL Alumni-Celebrity teams in a game the night before the Outdoor Classic.

"The success of the (California) NHL clubs has been very positive, but the American Hockey League teams in cities like Bakersfield and Ontario have elevated the sport that much higher and made it even more popular," Gretzky said in a news release Tuesday from the Condors. "It's great to see a city like Bakersfield with people who are excited about watching hockey and have gravitated to these players that one day will play in the National Hockey League."

The Outdoor Classic and NHL Alumni-Celebrity Game are highlights of Winterfest, which is planned for Dec. 21 to Jan. 7 at the BC stadium.

The NHL Alumni-Celebrity Game is included with a purchase of an Outdoor Classic ticket, according to the Condors.
